I highly recommend using a murphy bed kit. You can buy my exact one here.
To build the bed and the frame that goes around it, we used 4 sheets of 4×8 plywood. It helps that my dad built a massive shop in his backyard complete with a large table saw and every other cutting tool you can imagine.
Be warned – this bed is freaking heavy! And this is not a one-person job. My dad and I dropped the bed ON ME twice. I leveraged the hematoma on my leg for weeks.
We finished it out with built in cabinets and shelves so the entire bed and shelving spanned the width of the wall. I love how it looks – completely custom.
I went with Benjamin Moore Dark Teal for the color. I wanted something rich and not boring. I think this does the trick.
